Backup, business continuity and disaster recovery are the often unconsidered cogs of the IT wheel but are vital to the integrity of a complete infrastructural design. Unfortunately, the first time that businesses experience them is when it’s too late and they realise that they don’t exist.
Our starting point for backup, BC and DR is based on what you require in the case of a catastrophic event happening to your business. Think fire and flood, or worse. The types of questions that need to be answered are:
- How long can we be down.
- How long will it take to get back up and running.
- What current IT services can we do without in the interim period.
- What is the amount of data I can afford to lose.
These questions may seem obscure and daunting but the answers vary depending on the type of business in question.
For example, a financial institution could not afford:
- To be down for more than a few minutes or
- Lose ANY transactions
On the other hand a small business providing consultancy services that can afford downtime, could probably start up in another geographical location reasonably quickly and may not have had a transaction for days.
Any design will be based on these requirements and specified accordingly.
